You are moving and your budget for the move is a just about to explode. You need to rent a truck or hire movers. You need to make sure you get your bills paid early so they are not forgotten. If you have purchased a new home then you are dealing with closing costs and the cost of fixing things and painting before you move in. On the other hand if you are renting a new home then you need to pay deposits, first month rent, and possibly the last month of rent as well.

Boxes for your move is the perfect place to save money. While buying the boxes will save a lot of time, sometimes we need to save money instead. I you know a move is coming then the best thing you could do is save every box you get. I have always saved all boxes that could possibly be used in a move, but that has never been enough. If you are going to get rid of unneeded items while packing then you will also need boxes to place them into as well. Whether you have a garage full of boxes or not, here are 5 places to look for free moving boxes.

Ask Around

One of the first things you should do when you know that you will be moving is get the word out that you need any and all boxes. Ask your neighbors, coworkers, relatives, and friends. You would be surprised how much you might get. You just might find that people are glad to get the chance to clean the cardboard out of there basements and garages.

Grocery Stores

This is an old favorite. Produce boxes are often dirty and unsuitable, but the boxes canned foods come in are usually clean and very sturdy. Bread boxes are good for things that are light or for items to be donated or even thrown out.

Clothing Store

Clothing stores often have large boxes that are good for lighter things. There boxes are usually made of cardboard that is thin to medium in weight. These boxes are really clean and worth the effort to get.

Toy Store

I have worked in a toy store, so I will tell you from experience that these stores have wonderful boxes. Some are thin, but many are fairly thick. These boxes are clean and they get a lot of them almost daily. Another good thing about getting boxes from toy stores is that most of the time you will find the employees friendly and accommodating.

Hospitals

Hospitals are an untapped resource for boxes. Hospital boxes are wonderful. Big and sturdy and very clean. Finding these boxes can be a bit tricky. If you know anyone that works at a hospital then it will be easier. They will know or can find out the hospitals policies and where to get them. If you don’t know anyone then do not despair, you will just need to start asking around. Just remember that you are in a hospital and keep your inquiries appropriate and out of the way of any emergencies.

Finding free moving boxes takes time so relax and just keep at it. When asking employees about boxes you will get more no’s then yes’s. It will help to go when you believe the establishment will be slow. A busy employee or mangier will consider you a nuisance if they are busy.

Good luck in you free moving box search. If you are looking for more information about moving and relocating visit http://moveyoursocks.com

Boxes for My Move?

Ok so your getting ready to move, unless you hired a packing company or full service mover to pack your going to need boxes. Two questions your probably thinking are- How many boxes do I need? and Where do I get them?

Obviously you need to know roughly how many and what size boxes you need. When we talk about moving boxes generally there are three main sizes small, medium, or large.

*small boxes also called 1.5’s measure 18″ x 14″ x 12″

*medium boxes (3.0 or 3 cubes) measure 18″ x 18″ x 16″

*large boxes (4.5) measure 18″ x 18″ x 24″

When you are figuring out how many boxes you need a good guideline 20 small 20 medium and 5 large boxes for 2-4 rooms. If you have a lot of stuff (shelves and drawers full or overflowing) this number of boxes is for 2 rooms, If you don’t have a lot you can stretch this many boxes to 4 rooms.

A tall book shelf full of books will take 6-8 small boxes, books should always be packed in small boxes or book boxes. It makes them more manageable and can speed up your move. A large box full of books is not only heavier, but less manageable and more likely that the box

will fail causing more time and unnecessary damage to your books. A short 2 shelf bookshelf if full will take 3-4 small boxes.

Kitchens-

Depending on the size and amount of items to be packed a small kitchen will take- 2 Dishpack’s, 5 mediums, and 10 small boxes. A Larger kitchen will take around 4-6 dishpacks, 10-12 mediums, and 10-15 small boxes. Again this depends on how much or how little you have in your kitchen, This is just a general guideline.

Alright so now you have an idea of how many boxes will be necessary, so where do you get them? You have two options, you can buy boxes, or try to get them for free.

You can buy boxes from your local truck rental company, an online box supplier such as esupplystore.com or moveout.com. You can also try uhauls forum, ebay or craigslist. With these last options you might find them at a discount or even free.

If you really want to use free boxes, you can ask family or friends months ahead of your move if they will save boxes for you to use to move. Talking to people at department stores and grocery stores, you may find someone willing to save some boxes for you but don’t try to

make them save them for too long they take up space and bad communication can lead to them being thrown out. Probably your last option would be to check the loading dock or trash room of a good sized apartment building, people are always moving in and throwing away boxes.

Well other than some other supplies (packing tape, packing paper or newspaper and some markers) you should be ready to start packing for your move. Remember to pack to the top of the box and seal both ends with packing tape. Open boxes and garbage bags make your move more difficult and costly.

Now you just have to find movers..
